Great food cooked to perfection, great balance of tastes on each plate, friendly service and an elegant venue (if a bit too old British).

We were celebrating. I got a new job (one that I really really wanted and I’m crazy happy about) and I wanted to treat the s.o.. He had been great throughout my journey of researching new companies and going through recruitment processes. That’s the kind of guy he is, what can I say.

I found Wild Honey and read great stuff about it. I am a little apprehensive about online reviews – especially since we had a crap experience at Berner’s Tavern – but I thought we’d risk it. We did the right thing. Wild Honey comes a very close second to La Petite Maison when it comes to our personal list of special (and expensive) places for special occasions.

I apologise about the quality of the photos right now. What is actually quite a lovely light in the restaurant (low, relaxed) is actually crap light for photographs.

For starters we shared the winter salad of clementine, bitter leaves and sweet spice and the ravioli of Italian greens, bouillon of smoked potato and roast onion. I found the clementine taste in the salad overpowering but very exciting. The s.o. loved the ravioli – especially since it was not the usual cheese, mushrooms or ham but a trully creative dish.

Both the Grilled Creekstone Angus beef, caramelised celeriac purée, crisp Anna potatoes and the Denham Estate venison, chestnut purée, pickled cranberries that we had for mains were exceptional. We both love meat and this was of high quality and cooked just right. In some other restaurants (cough Berner’s Tavern cough) we had found the stuff around the meat to be all over the place, but here the tastes are balanced and create a complete image of what the dish is all about. Harmonious combinations might be the right phrase.

Special mention goes to the wine list. There is great variety there and some truly excellent wines, especially from Italy (the s.o. being obviously in love with the country and its food, wine, people etc.)

Overall I would say that this is an excellent place for a (very) special occasion – do consider cost of course cause it’s not for an everyday standard dinner.
