You might be old enough to remember the horrific Siege of Dubrovnik. You might have seen glimpses in travel articles. Nothing compares to the real thing which requires the following: stamina for all the stairs you&#8217;ll have to climb, a trusty GPS\/data connection and a bottomless sense of wonder. Dubrovnik, in short, is a little <strong>miracle<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Pile Gate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19535234496\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3737\/19535234496_ae6ea668df_z.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Pile Gate\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I admit this took me a while to write. My apologies, I have been travelling non stop which is not a bad thing. I went to Dubrovnik with work (but we don&#8217;t talk about that, so there) at <strong>the end of May<\/strong> which &#8211; trust me &#8211; is not the height of the season.\u00a0You want to think about avoiding the touristy season, the city is a lot better with fewer people. Here are my brief notes on what I got up to there &#8211; and some stories to keep you entertained.<\/p>\n<h3>Walked the walls<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Dubrovnik from the walls\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19534490716\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/545\/19534490716_b07f1ed615_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dubrovnik from the walls\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if there is something nicer or more spectacular to do in Dubrovnik. Pay the fee, have your water bottle with you (and sunblock) and climb up there.<\/p>\n<p>If you remember<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siege_of_Dubrovnik\" target=\"_blank\"> the war<\/a> (I do) notice how many building have new tiles. It was one of the saddest things I encountered, but also bitter sweet to see the amazing work that went into the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/europe\/4223859.stm\" target=\"_blank\">restoration<\/a>. I asked a Croat about the changes, about the amazing work, about the whole starting again thing. &#8220;<em>It was either that or just die&#8221;<\/em>, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Learn from my fail: ALWAYS carry water and sunblock with you. I&#8217;ve never seen a more patient guide.<\/p>\n<p>He has to be, since apparently people go slightly insane. For example, kissing the ground where Joffrey\u00a0died. Right.<\/p>\n<p>The tour was totally worth it because in every place apart from the Game of Thrones stuff, Tomislav also explained the real history and background of each location. <a title=\"Lovrijenac and the bay\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19374115439\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/290\/19374115439_bc4e82903a_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Lovrijenac and the bay\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>The best story was about the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/croatia.hr\/en-GB\/Destinations\/Town\/Dubrovnik\/Fort-of-St-Lawrence-(Lovrijenac)?Y2lcMTU1MCxkc1wxNjcscFwyNA%3d%3d\" target=\"_blank\">Lovrijenac fort<\/a><\/strong> or St. Lawrence Fortress. You see, in the 11th century Dubrovnik was a powerful City Republic (kinda like Venice). Well, Venice wanted to build a fort opposite Dubrovnik because&#8230; reasons. So, Dubrovnik goes and builds a church on the rock. If anyone messed with\u00a0a church in those days they would have to answer to the Pope. Awkward. The crafty Dubrovnik people pretended that the were extending the church initially, all the while building an external wall that reaches thickness of 12 METERS! In the meantime the wall that faces Dubrovnik is only 60cm thick, ensuring that the fort can never be used against the city, even if captured. One of the ways to really appreciate the city is to see it from the Srd Hill (don&#8217;t ask me how that&#8217;s pronounced). So take the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dubrovnikcablecar.com\" target=\"_blank\">cable car<\/a> (very modern, very clean and climb up there). I mean, look at that beauty.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Dubrovnik from Srd Hill\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19373459600\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/312\/19373459600_51204d4f70_z.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dubrovnik from Srd Hill\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Went to the haunted island<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Lokrum Island\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19372733918\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3747\/19372733918_bd0dfe9462_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Lokrum Island\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>The locals say that if you spend the night on <a href=\"http:\/\/croatia.hr\/en-GB\/Destinations\/Islands\/Island\/Lokrum?ZHNcNTcz\" target=\"_blank\">Lokrum<\/a> island you won&#8217;t wake up. There are a number of versions why that is but here&#8217;s my fave: Napoleon conquers Dubrovnik and sends the heads of three aristocratic families to evict the monks from the Franciscan Monastery on Lokrum. Monks do some dark hocus pocus and leave. Why chance it? \ud83d\ude42 There is a great botanic garden there though, check it out. Trip to the field, traditional cooking, going to the forest for some wood and picking some vegetables. I was quite touched. The country around Dubrovnik reminded me of Northern Greece where I spent most of my childhood summers.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Cooking at Konavle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19373151660\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3674\/19373151660_4306919a0a_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Cooking at Konavle\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>First swim of the summer<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"Banje Beach\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19561474925\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/538\/19561474925_923e4b9e3e_z.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Banje Beach\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>I am Greek. It was hot. I reckoned that if I didn&#8217;t go to the beach somebody would take away my Greek passport. Major mistake. Seas more to the North are NOT the Mediterannean. I lasted about 3 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ew-dubrovnik.com\" target=\"_blank\">Banje <\/a>beach has very deep and very clean waters though, really impressive. Do visit early and pay the steep fare to get a VIP bed and just people watch. Or go late and get entry for free &#8211; which is way we did quite by accident.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Banje Beach\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19565745471\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/362\/19565745471_c66184feb3_z.jpg?resize=640%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Banje Beach\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Grabbed a beer at Buza<\/h3>\n<p><a title=\"The way to Cafe Buza\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sofiagk\/19554581352\/in\/datetaken-public\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-header=\"true\" data-footer=\"true\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/480\/19554581352_6abd61b41d_z.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The way to Cafe Buza\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Through a tiny little passage you will find yourself outside the walls where <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/100216765449318883564\/about?gl=uk&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Buza<\/a> perches on the rock.<\/p>\n<p>So we were there, I grabbed a beer from the friendly two guys behind the bar, rolled some cigarettes for some of the lovely people around me and just listened. If there was one place that made me nostalgic for the Greek summer, Cafe Buza was it.<\/p>\n<p>All in all Dubrovnik is an amazing place and I really want to go again.<\/p>\n<p>Special (but somewhat cryptic) shoutout to K., L. and C. for all the great times.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong> Disclosure<\/strong>: Went to Dubrovnik in May 2015.
